Georgia high school marching band spells out racial slur, parents demand expulsion

- Parents are outraged after members of a Gwinnett County high school band displayed a racial slur during their halftime performance Friday night.

News outlets report instrument covers normally used by the Brookwood High School marching band to spell the mascot Broncos instead was used Friday to spell a slur insulting black people.

"For those of you who have attended our games, you may have noticed that the sousaphones (a brass instrument similar to a tuba) wear covers in the stands to show school spirit", Principal William Ford Jr. wrote in the letter to parents.

Although Ford did not indicate whether any action will be taken against any school officials, he did state that halftime procedures would be reviewed and that disciplinary action would be taken against offending band members. During the halftime show, band members took to the field, and members of the sousaphone section chose to play a senior prank.

He said the students involved would be disciplined.

Ford said three of the students, each seniors, planned and executed the incident while a fourth student, a junior, apparently went along with the incident "at the last minute".

He said the activity on the field was "very busy" and that "several personnel challenges" during the senior night activities resulted in the band's director not being on the field during the performance.

"The mascot is a horse, it's a bronco, and the "B" and the "R" were nowhere near", Myers said. "It's just like saying the N-word, but this is worse because it's coming from students at a public high school".

"Unfortunately, as they performed and moved around the field, the letters on the instruments aligned to spell a completely unacceptable, racial term", he added, stressing that the incident was "hurtful and disrespectful".

Some parents told Fox 5 they wanted to see the students who were responsible expelled.
