Polling has shown Gillum holding a consistent lead over DeSantis. At a recent DeSantis rally, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said the race was "cotton-pickin' important".

He joked during brief remarks that he wasn't sure his wife, R. Jai Gillum, whom he met at Florida A&M University, had voted for him.

"I voted for you", she replied.

Republican candidate Ron DeSantis has defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum to become the next governor of Florida.

But if the primary election's principles were any indication, money meant little, to begin with.

Thirty-nine percent of Floridians registered to vote did so early, either in person or by mail, according to state election figures. "And by voting for something we're returning to the politics of decency and what's right and what's common between all of us".

"He came down here and fired up our voters, and it looks like we're poised for victory", U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Fort Walton Beach Republican, told The News Service of Florida on Tuesday night. Early voting ended Sunday. Hayes did not issue a correction on his popular Twitter feed, which has more than 1.75 million followers, nor was there a correction issued on his show's Twitter page. More than 973,000 voters with no party affiliation have also voted.

"We all learned in 2016 not to count on anything, not polls, not election integrity, not the electoral mood", Dawn Hucklebridge, 36, a friend of Gillum, said at his election night gathering as it became clear he would likely lose. In the weeks leading up to the election, numerous polls had projected Nelson as the likely victor, though the race was competitive leading into Election Day.

GOP Rep. Carlos Curbelo, a two-term incumbent in a district that covers the Florida Keys and southwest Miami-Dade County, conceded to Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell about three hours after polls closed.

DeSantis was helped along by campaign manager Susie Wiles, who took a campaign that was struggling and gave it the kind of boost it needed for that most quintessentially Florida of outcomes: a narrow win, but a win all the same.

"In Florida there is a choice between a Harvard/Yale educated man named @RonDeSantisFL who has been a great Congressman and will be a great Governor - and a Dem who is a thief and who is Mayor of poorly run Tallahassee said to be one of the most corrupt cities in the Country!" "This election is going to be decided on election day, not just by the counting of the (votes) but by who votes", Rubio said.

Freeman had a list of things that mattered to him as he cast a ballot in the gubernatorial race.
