Since his season will be finishing early for that reason, he is making the most of the extra time off to go for surgery on an ongoing ankle issue.

Novak Djokovic returned to No. 1 on Monday after a two-year absence and is assured of becoming the first man in the history of the ATP rankings to finish a season at the top spot after being outside the top 20 during that season. To win the last tournament of the season - a Masters 1000.

Rafael Nadal's season is over after he withdrew from the 2018 ATP Finals which start at The O2 in London on Sunday 11 November.

Nadal has only been able to take up his hard won place at the Finals three times in the past seven years - and last season was far from fit as he pulled out after just one match.

It is a frustrating time for the 32-year-old Spaniard, who has not played since a knee injury forced to him retire after two sets of his US Open semi-final against Juan Martin del Potro in September.

"Against Novak Djokovic, the world No 1, that is the only explanation".

Rafael Nadal has generated many remarkable statistics in his storied career. Roger Federer has a big serve too'.

A hip injury proved increasingly problematic during his quarter-final against Marin Cilic and the top seed cut a frustrated figure as he retired trailing 2-0 in the fifth and final set.

Armenian Karen Khachanov, a rising star in the world of Tennis from Russian Federation, defeated incoming world champion Novak Djokovic to win his first Masters 1000 title at the Paris Masters, reported the BBC.

In Paris that year, he also became the first player to break through the $100 million (87.8 million euro) prize money barrier.

At Wimbledon this year, he hit out at some Centre Court fans for a perceived lack of respect while schedulers also felt his ire for exiling him to Court Two for a third round match.

It looks like the best possible draw for Federer, who has added another remarkable year, winning yet another Grand Slam in Australia.

Once again we find ourselves wondering what shape Nadal will be in for next season.
