Boeing Warning Provides New Clues Into Lion Air 737 Max Crash

The US aerospace giant has issued an "operations manual bulletin" to airlines using the aircraft, telling them how to deal with "erroneous input" from sensors.

Following the fatal crash of a Lion Air jet in Indonesia last week, Boeing has issued a warning to airlines operating its new 737 MAX about what to do in the event of an "angle-of-attack" sensor failure and avoid a risky nose-dive.

Boeing's newly issued bulletin focuses on the 737 MAX's angle-of-attack sensors, or AOA sensors, which are supposed to provide data about the angle at which wind is passing over the airplane's wings.

These sensors measure the angle of attack of planes when climbing to ensure that they do not attempt to fly too steeply and stall.

The doomed jet was a Boeing 737-Max 8, one of the world's newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes, and there is still no answer as to what caused the crash.

"We will.conduct a special audit of the crews' qualifications and staff communication", transportation minister Budi Karya Sumadi told reporters Monday as he announced the probe into Lion's operations.

Boeing has more than 4,500 orders for the airliners, which feature larger engines, more aerodynamic wings and an upgraded cockpit with larger glass displays.

Southwest issued a statement saying it has thoroughly reviewed Boeing's guidance.

Under the subject heading, the Boeing bulletin says: "Uncommanded Nose Down Stabilizer Trim Due to Erroneous Angle of Attack (AOA) During Manual Flight Only".

Transport safety committee chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono said airspeed indicator malfunctions on the jet's last four flights, which were revealed by an analysis of the flight data recorder, were intertwined with the sensor issue.

Earlier this week, Indonesian officials hinted that airspeed indicators played a role in the deadly October 29 crash that killed all 189 people on board.

The committee has said they were dealing with an "erroneous airspeed indication". If pilots aren't careful, they can cause severe nose-down trim settings that make it impossible to level a plane.

WestJet also has 9 of the 737 MAX jets in its fleet, but the airline did not immediately respond to a query about the Boeing bulletin from CBC News.

The plane is the latest generation of Boeing's workhorse narrowbody aircraft, with more than 200 delivered since it entered service a year ago and a total of 4,700 orders placed by airlines around the world.

The crash was the first time one of the airplanes went down.

Safety investigators said the plane may have hit speeds of 600 miles per hour before hitting the water. However, if the sensor malfunctions, it can cause the plane's computers to erroneously think it is in a stall - which can then command the aircraft to abruptly dive.

Indonesia's search and rescue agency has extended the search until Sunday.
