He finished with figures of 3 for 54 as Pakistan were bowled out for 219 in 47.2 overs. The off-spinner, who'd played a key role in Pakistan's T20I series victory, has continuously run into trouble with his bowling action since he was first reported during an ODI tri-series in 2005. It wasn't a demolition job by no means, just accomplished batting, calmly finding the gaps without too much risk.

Taylor scored 80 for his 42nd half-century while Latham knocked a 64-ball 68 - including five hits to the ropes - to lift New Zealand from 78-3 after they won the toss and batted.

Boult joined Danny Morrison and Shane Bond in the history books of New Zealand as he absolutely shut out the Pakistan top order to inflict their first loss in nine matches.

Imam-ul-Haq (34) and Shoaib Malik (30) added 63 for the fourth wicket but both fell in successive overs before the Sarfraz-Wasim stand briefly reignited hopes.

Earlier, Ross Taylor and Tom Latham scored fighting half-centuries to lift New Zealand to a challenging 266-9.

Paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi, playing only his fourth one-day global, had jolted New Zealand at the start with the wickets of George Worker (one) and Colin Munro (29).

Shadab dismissed Kane Williamson for 27 before Taylor and Latham came together.

During the Pakistan innings, Shadab Khan had claimed three wickets in four deliveries but Boult topped that with a hat-trick.

He dismissed Latham leg-before and did the same to Henry Nicholls (nought) the very next ball, before removing De Grandhomme two balls later when he edged to first slip without scoring.

Tail-enders Ish Sodhi (24) and Tim Southee (20) added a precious 42 runs for the eight wicket to bring some respectability to New Zealand's total.

"We caught them at 210-7 but 50 plus runs for the last three wickets hurt us badly", said Sarfraz. Imad reached fifty before Southee got his man, while Ferguson claimed the wicket of Shaheen as New Zealand got their series off to a promising start.

Hafeez's bowling will also be under the spotlight in the second game of the three-match series in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
