Puss in Boots, the sidekick character who got his own spin-off movie of the same name, is being considered a part of this reboot effort as well.

The overall goal of this reboot, according to Meledandri, is to find a way to introduce this franchise to a new audience.

Meledandri told Variety that much of the films' popularity can be attributed to the stellar voice cast - featuring Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Antonio Banderas (Puss).

He said: "When you look back on those vocal performances they're awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations". Meledandri says the challenge will be "to find something that really does feel like it's not simply yet another film in a series of sequels", so rather than a continuation of Shrek and Fiona's story, he will develop entirely new tales.

In an interview with Variety, Meledandri, who is also the founder of Illumination Entertainment, revealed his plans to revive the childhood classics.

DreamWorks Animation, the studio that created Shrek back in 2001, was acquired by Comcast's NBCUniversal division in 2016, and at this time Meledandri was chosen to oversee DreamWorks as well as Illumination - though he now acts in an advisory role for DreamWorks.

He added: "The way in which I work with my team to make movies is very intensive and hands-on, and it really doesn't allow me the opportunity to think about running a second operation". "You want to find something in the narrative that really feels like a departure".

It makes sense, given the original film is nearly old enough to buy a beer, but Meledandri said he's dead keen on retaining the most crucial element of the entire saga: the voice talent of the movie's original stars.

But not all fans think Shrek needs a cinema shakeup.
