Eyes on Kentucky as early sign on House shift

Shalala, Mucarsel-Powell flip Miami-Dade House seats to Democrats

So everyone should be prepared for surprises - because there always are some.

In California, four GOP seats in the one-time Republican stronghold of Orange County were in play, along with three other seats to the north beyond Los Angeles and into the Central Valley.

The opposite trends in the House and the Senate underscored a political and cultural gulf among diverse and affluent liberals living in big cities and their suburbs and the mostly, white, working class and rural conservative bloc of voters for whom Trump remains an iconic figure.

Semiconductors have fared better than any other industry group, even though they are highly exposed to China and could become casualties in Trump's trade war with Beijing. More women than ever were running, along with veterans and minorities, many of them motivated by revulsion over Trump.

"Democrats had a narrow path through the suburbs in districts won by Hillary Clinton, and it appears they were able to flip those seats despite strong performances from our candidates who consistently outperformed the top of the ticket in almost every race", Daudt said in a statement. Republican Martha McSally and Democrat Kyrsten Sinema are battling it out for the coveted seat. It wouldn't necessarily be a resounding affirmation of Trump - these are only red states the GOP would be winning - but it would lead to some real, justified soul-searching.

Overall, more voters disapproved of Trump's job performance than approved - a finding that is largely consistent with recent polling. The Republican side of the aisle elected mostly white men.

They are vying for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. That means the wave would have to deliver Democrats one more seat - a tough pickup in either Tennessee or Texas - and then help them hold everything else: Florida, Indiana, Missouri and Montana.

If they do win control of the House, Democrats will try to harden USA policy toward Saudi Arabia, Russia and North Korea, while maintaining the status quo on hot-button areas like China and Iran.

But this year, women ran for office in unprecedented numbers, mostly as Democrats and many as first-time candidates.

Also victorious was Republican Mitt Romney, the vanquished 2012 GOP presidential candidate who grabbed the Utah seat being vacated by the retiring GOP Sen.

This would be a huge win for the GOP.

A record number of women appeared headed to Congress as polls closed Tuesday. Five of those races are widely seen as competitive or leaning Republican.

For decades, Georgia's 6th District has been solid Republican turf - electing Newt Gingrich and Tom Price to Congress - and voting for GOP presidential candidates such as Romney and John McCain by wide margins. The Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) would very likely be repealed once and for all. Immediately, talk would turn to how the 2016 election was perhaps a fluke and to how Trump's divisiveness had backfired.

The contradictory message sent by voters on Tuesday night recalls Clinton's win in the popular vote but defeat in the Electoral College and underlines the split down the middle of American politics.

It would also be yet another reckoning for pollsters and media organizations that pay for the surveys.

Trump pointed to his boisterous rally crowds as proof that Republicans were surging at the right time, rejecting suggestions that Democrats entered Election Day with an edge in enthusiasm.

Nelson, 76, faced outgoing GOP Gov. Rick Scott, who poured over $50 million of his own fortune into his campaign, the most in the U.S.

This is not seen as the likeliest of scenarios, but it's not out of the realm of possibility either.

But the new Democratic House will pose a perilous problem for the President, who must now brace for the novel experience of oversight from Capitol Hill with Democratic committee chairs promising constraints on his power that the GOP never attempted.

A lot would have to happen, especially in the Senate, for this to happen.

Expect 1 of these scenarios to play out after all votes are tallied.

TEXAS: Deep in the heart of this traditionally Republican bastion is one of the marquee matchups of the 2018 midterms: the Canadian-born Republican senator and Trump tormentor-turned-ally Ted Cruz versus young upstart Democrat challenger Beto O'Rourke.

Trump's claim that those who backed him were successful was not without exceptions. It would have to trigger a degree of soul-searching - in at least some Republican corners. The new congressional term begins in January 2019.

Democrats saw the election in equally historic terms. They might not be called for days and possibly weeks later, especially because the vote there is counted slowly. He had already voted by absentee ballot. In 2016, to the surprise of many, 319,000 absentee ballots were rejected for one reason or another.

Two bright spots for Democrats: In Colorado, Jared Polis's win will make the outgoing congressman the first openly gay governor in USA history. The consequences would be enormous, the rancor pitched and the tension thick.
