Mail Bomber Suspect's Mom Calls On Trump To Tone Down Anti-Media, Anti-Democrat Rhetoric

The man accused of mailing pipe bombs to prominent critics of President Donald Trump will face a federal judge Tuesday in New York City.

Sayoc faces up to 48 years in prison if he is convicted of the five charges that were filed in NY because some of the bombs were recovered there.

CNN was referring to President Donald Trump's aggressive rhetoric against illegal immigration, sending troops to the border, and warning of the consequences of Democratic victories in the 2018 elections.

Prosecutors told a judge that Sayoc, reportedly a rabid supporter of Trump and white nationalism, presents a flight risk and is a serious danger to the public.

The 56-year-old was recently extradited to NY from Florida, where he was arrested October 26 at an auto parts store.

He was living in a van covered plastered with stickers of Mr Trump and images of some of the United States president's opponents with red crosshairs over their faces. Court documents indicate he is charged with transporting explosives across state lines, illegally mailing explosives, threatening former presidents and others, threatening interstate communications and assaulting federal officials.

His lawyers decided not to seek his release on bail after prosecutors released a letter outlining more evidence against him, including DNA linking him to 10 of the explosive devices and fingerprints on two of them.

He is accused of mailing at least 15 pipe bombs to several high-profile Democrats, including former President Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Cesar Sayoc, 56, of Aventura, appeared in federal court in Miami last week, but did not speak as his attorneys waived his detention hearing.

All of the bombs were sent through the USA postal service but none exploded and no one was injured.

Just days after CNN was sent a mail bomb, Trump tweeted that the "fake news media" are the "true enemy of the people".

Prosecutors say the most recent crude bomb was recovered Friday in California, addressed to the liberal activist Tom Steyer.

While Sayoc's attorneys have not commented on his mental health, his mother wrote a letter to ABC News saying he has suffered from mental illness for years.

"My son has been ill for a long time and my family and I have tried, over and over again, without success to urge him to get the help he needs", she wrote.
