Ms Quintal is the CPJ's Africa program coordinator while Ms Mumo is the organisation's sub-Saharan Africa representative. "They have been taken to an unknown location", read the tweet.

The South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) called on the government to find answers as to why Quintal and her Kenyan colleague were detained in Tanzania.

Officers who identified themselves as working with the Tanzanian immigration authority detained Quintal and Mumo when they arrived at their hotel room. "The high commissioner, [Thami] Mseleku, is meeting with them to understand the events of last night‚" department spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya said.

The two were on a reporting mission missing in the country. "Taken Away from Southern Sun Hotel". "We call on the government of Tanzania to allow journalists to work freely and to allow those who defend their rights to access the country without interference".

On Thursday, CPJ's executive director Joel Simon said the journalists' mobile phones may have been compromised.

While they are no longer in custody, Mabaya said Tanzanian authorities have their passports. As the International Press Institute reported in August: "Press freedom in Tanzania has drifted into an unprecedented crisis under Magufuli's regime".

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
