Stinky durian fruit grounds Indonesian passenger plane

Durian known as the world's worst-smelling fruit

In April, the stench of rotting durian in a library at Melbourne's RMIT University led to a mass evacuation.

The fruit, which is sometimes referred to as the "king of fruits", has a creamy, stringy texture, but also a smell that Smithsonian magazine once compared to "turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock".

According to the BBC, about two tons of the fruit was in the plane's cargo hold.

The Indonesia flight was due to travel between Sumatra and Jakarta on Monday morning, when travellers realised (by catching a whiff of it) they'd be journeying in the company of crates full of durian fruit.

Durian is considered a delicacy in many parts of Asia but it attracts a lot of negative attention thanks to its "raw sewage"-like smell". Some countries have banned patrons from carrying and eating it on public transportation, airlines, and accommodation services.

An Indonesian plane was temporarily grounded after passengers complained about an overwhelming smell of durian in the cabin. "I complained to the stewardess but they told me to just fill up a complaint form", passenger Amir Zidane wrote on Facebook, the BBC reported.

"Man, this is a bad smell", Zidane said he told the officer.

Staff finally unloaded the fruit and the plane took off an hour later, reaching Jakarta safely.

An Indonesian flight, Sriwijaya Air bound for Jakarta was reportedly delayed for about an hour yesterday (6 November), but it wasn't a technical error that caused it.

At one point, things got so heated that a brawl nearly ensued, according to Boyke Ledy Watra, a journalist with Indonesian news agency Antara who was among those on board. Passengers on the ground later recorded crews unloading the shipment of durian from the cargo area.

Despite its decision to offload the fruit from the cargo, Sriwijaya Air senior corporate communications manager Retri Maya later released a statement justifying their decision by saying it was "not illegal" to carry durian fruit.
