Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, will visit the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from November 5 to 9, where several regions suffer the appearance of Ebola.

Ebola is a deadly disease caused by a virus, though there are five strains, and four of them can make people sick. The region has also seen 189 deaths, 154 of which were in confirmed Ebola patients.

To alert worldwide travelers to the DRC of the expanding Ebola situation, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) upgraded its Travel Alert to Level 2, Practice Enhanced Precautions, on October 19, 2018.

In a joint statement, the Ugandan Health Ministry and World Health Organization (WHO) said the move meant to start on Monday has been delayed for two days for reorienting the vaccination teams. The government and outbreak control partners have been unable to negotiate a ceasefire between groups to contain the outbreak.

It said the risk of the outbreak spreading to other provinces and neighboring countries remains high. This is the first time that a vaccination drive has begun before the actual outbreak.

It was learned from authorities that about 26,000 people in the central African country have meanwhile received a vaccine to prevent Ebola. "That, combined with the lack of proper awareness among the society, mean that many refuse to even accept that there is a disease such as Ebola", said Dr. Eric Mukama, CARE's health specialist in Beni. Additionally, surrounding nations are also preparing for the event that the outbreak spreads.

"This is targeted vaccination", she emphasized.

"It is highly likely that Uganda may import Ebola virus from DRC given the closeness of the current epicenter, the high population movements due to trade, social-cultural connections and easy accessibility of health services in Uganda", a health official said in the press release. In Yei, a South Sudanese city bordering the DRC, an isolation area has been established in a hospital and clinicians are being trained about the symptoms of Ebola.
