Chinese Workers Made To Drink Urine For Failing To Finish Tasks

Chinese investigators have found that a company was forcing employees to drink urine, eat insects and also flogging them for failure to meet sales targets.

Two of the company managers have been jailed for 10 days, while a third manager will spend five days in jail, Zunyi police said in a statement on Weibo.

A video of the staff being flogged with belts and forced to drink urine and eat cockroaches circulated in the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo recently, a sight that did not fail to shock the many viewers who came upon it.

Other staff, said to be employees of the home renovation company in the city of Guizhou, can be seen drinking yellow liquid from plastic cups while holding their noses. The hashtag "employees who failed to meet their goals forced to drink urine" has since been viewed nearly 540,000 times.

The managers previously punished low-achieving employees by forcing them to eat mustard or chilli, according to China News, but penalties have escalated since October to eating cockroaches and receiving beatings with a belt. This was followed by jail sentence for three of the company's managers.

Other punishments involved drinking vinegar or toilet water, selling condoms and sanitary pads on the street and having their head shaved, according to other text messages in the post.

The punishments were all publicly meted out in the presence of other staff, state media said, citing workers who had quit the company in the southwestern province of Guizhou.

Netizens have questioned why the staff did not resign after being subjected to such maltreatment, but one employee shared via Pear Video that they were owed two months' pay by the firm.
