Indian spin bowler Shiva Singh 360-degree pirouette falls foul of umpires

Shiva Singh rotated 360 degrees in his run-up just before the delivery during a domestic game

The incident has triggered debate online over whether the delivery should be legal.

Despite seeing his innovative 360-degree twirl style delivery banned mid-game, Singh still performed strongly for Uttar Pradesh, finishing the match with four wickets to his name. The ball pitched just wide of leg stump and the batsman blocked it out on the leg side.

On-field umpire Vinod Seshan instantly called a dead call, much to the bemusement of the left-arm spinner, who earlier this year was a member of the Indian squad who won the under-19 World Cup. The umpires had intervened when he tried to bowl with the 360-degree turn and called it a dead ball.

Left-arm spinner Shiva Singh who was representing Uttar Pradesh in the under-23 CK Nayudu Trophy has opened a new debate after bowling a freakish "360-degree swirl" delivery during a match against Bengal.

Former English captain Michael Vaughan is a fan of Singh's action, tweeting he had "no issues at all" with how the rising star approaches the crease.

While some feel the run-up is irrelevant as long as the ball was released normally, others felt that the swirl was a deliberate attempt to distract the batsman.

'I delivered this 360-degree ball (recently) against Kerala in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well, where it was fine'.

"This is particularly so if there was no apparent advantage to be gained from the twirl, unlike, for example, the bowler varying the width of the release point or the length of his/her run-up, which are entirely lawful".

"Batsman always go for the reverse-sweep or the switch-hit against bowlers", he said.

Former Australian spin bowler and bowling coach Peter Sleep said he thought the tactic was "pushing the line".

"If you were going to do it every ball, it might be a different story, but when it's a one-off, I think that makes it a bit too hard - I don't really think that's in the spirit of the game".
