Melbourne attack: Man arrested after fire and stabbings

Australian police shot a knife-wielding man who is believed to have stabbed three people in Melbourne's city-center Friday, killing one of them.

Australians are loving the man who stopped the Bourke Street attacker in Melbourne using only a shopping cart.

The street where the auto caught fire is the same one when in January 2017 a fatal but not terror-related incident when a man plowed his vehicle in to pedestrians at a high speed, killing six people and woulding about 30.

'Three people have been stabbed, unfortunately one is deceased at the scene, two other victims are now in hospital, ' police Superintendent David Clayton told reporters at the scene.

"Trolley Man, the hero Australia needs", one woman said on Twitter shortly after a series of videos of the attack began to circulate online.

Police shot the man in the chest after he charged at them with the knife. At a press conference, a police spokesperson said there are no links to terrorism at this stage.

One of the stabbing victims was dead at the scene and two others were taken to a hospital.

"He is someone who is accordingly known to Victoria Police and the federal intelligence agencies", he said.

He's in a critical condition.

"Police shot the male in the chest and he is now in a critical condition in hospital", Superintendent Clayton said, adding the officers are okay".

"At the same time, passers-by were calling out that members of the public had been stabbed".

The two others, aged 26 and 58, were in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

In a series of tweets, Daniel Andrews, the premier of Victoria state, called the incident "an act of terror struck the heart of our city, in a place where past wounds have still not healed".

Witnesses have described hearing a loud bang during the incident.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack and authorities say they are investigating it as an act of terrorism.

Footage circulating on social media shows a vehicle, which appears to have crashed into shop fronts, on fire.

Sarah Werkmeister, a witness, told The Herald Sun: "All I saw was the auto on fire, and the police cuffing someone on the ground".

Victoria Police are urging any witnesses to the incident to attend Melbourne West Police station to give a statement, or alternatively upload any images or videos from the incident to the Victoria Police facebook page.
