Up to three apps can run at the same time on the phone. Samsung first unveiled a prototype for a foldable phone in 2014, which looks vastly different than the one we saw on Wednesday. To facilitate multitasking, Samsung described at the event a new, intuitive interface design called One UI to be used with the Infinity Flex Display.

Dave Burke, vice president of engineering at Google, said at the Android Developer Summit that Google is "enhancing Android to take advantage of this new form factor with as little work as necessary". Kicking off the company's keynote, Samsung announced that it's officially making Bixby open to developers so they can create custom commands for the AI.

The three new notched displays should be heading to new devices by 2019 and beyond.

But they were unexpectedly beaten by a Chinese display start-up, Royole, last week.

Royole said it would start filling orders in late December.

There is a high chance it will carry a price tag of around 2 million won ($1,790). Huawei wants to release a foldable handset and LG is working on foldable TVs, according to The Verge.

Although the headline-grabbing announcement from today's Samsung Developer Conference was its new foldable smartphone display, the company also revealed a few updates to its Bixby virtual assistant that make it quite a bit smarter.

Samsung is also adding five additional languages to Bixby in the coming months - such as British English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
