In the lower chamber of Congress, Democrats so far have 219-193 seat majority. And in the Senate, the Democrats were facing the worst map in at least two decades, with a large proportion of their caucus up for re-election and those elections happening to take place in states Trump won.

Despite losing, O'Rourke's campaign was the best showing by a Democrat in Texas in 20 years and looks certain to be a front runner for the Democrat ticket in three years' time.

"The control of the House, in turn, will allow the Democrats to open new investigations on the president".

It also saw the birth of the small government-obsessed Tea Party, which proved to be formidable opposition for President Obama and even then-Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner.

"It broke something in me", McMorrow told reporters Wednesday, on a conference call hosted by Emerge America.

"The Democrats in the House will have to decide just how much presidential harassment they think is good strategy".

During the campaign, Pelosi urged candidates to focus on lowering health care costs and creating jobs with infrastructure investment, and she tamped down calls for impeachment.

"They ignored the consultants who said they should cover up their tattoos and smile more, and they ignored the powerful men of the Republican Party who never took them seriously anyway".

Rep. Peter Welch speaks at the Democratic election night party Tuesday. People of color and youthful voters proved to be pivotal - energized not by "moderate" candidates but by strong progressive populism. In all, 91 Republican candidates got some kind of nod from Trump.

At 29, Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. The Democrats also picked up seven new governorships, thus revitalising their party ahead of 2020.

Only two other Muslims have been elected to Congress, and both are men now in office: Ellison and Indiana Democratic Rep. Andre Carson.

Republican already are sounding warnings about obstructive partisan abuses and threats, saying the Democrats will harass and try to immobilize the Trump administration in the guise of congressional investigations.

Numerous winning candidates campaigned on the need for better health care for all Americans.

Pelosi "loves this country, and she's a very smart woman", Trump said, adding that he had "a very warm conversation" with her on Tuesday.

Given Trump's suburban unpopularity, some vulnerable incumbents struggled throughout the campaign to keep Trump's reputation at a distance in voters' minds. The polls also show Trump was a major factor: a minority of voters voted for Trump and his policies while the majority of voters displayed an anti-Trump sentiment.

But Meadows said he fears "there will probably be a lot more subpoenas issued for fishing expeditions that may or may not be based on anything but speculation".

Pennsylvania was particularly daunting for Republicans after court-imposed redistricting and a rash of retirements put several seats in play.

Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are the first Muslim women and Sharice Davids and Debra Haaland the first Native American women to be elected to Congress. At least three other red districts flipped to blue.

Democrats failed to defeat a vulnerable incumbent in Kentucky, where Republican Rep. Andy Barr won over former Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath.

Republicans had expected the GOP tax plan would be the cornerstone of their election agenda this year, but it became a potential liability in key states along the East and West coasts where residents could face higher tax bills because of limits on property and sales tax deductions. Reps. Jeff Denham (R-CA) and Mimi Walters (R-CA) now hold small leads, as does Republican Young Kim in an open Orange County seat, while Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) trails by a bit. "The electoral setup strongly favoured the Republicans in the Senate, where they were defending only 9 seats vs 25 for the Democrats (counting the two independents with the Democrats)". "Some close races, some races that didn't go the Republican way, midterm elections - all those things come into play". LePage governed largely by mobilizing the House minority Republican caucus to sustain a record number of 642 vetoes - more than all other ME governors combined going back to 1917 and 80 times as many as his predecessor, Baldacci.
