A college country night at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, turned deadly late Wednesday when 28-year-old Ian Long reportedly forced his way in and opened fire on the young people gathered there. At least 12 people were killed.

Dean said his department had several previous contacts with Long, a former US Marine, including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him acting irate and irrationally.

Witnesses say the suspect was dressed in all black, and forced his way into the bar after first shooting the bouncer.

"I see that girl every single time I'm there", witness Holden Harrah told CNN, fighting back tears. She said everyone yelled "Get down!" and then it was silent for a few seconds.

Kayla Simmons said she was inside the bar when shots were fired directly behind her. Bullets continued as she managed to escape outside into the parking lot.

"It's a horrific scene in there, there is blood everywhere and the suspect is part of that, and I didn't want to get that close and disturb the scene and possibly disturb the investigation", said Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean.

"I love you. I'll talk to you later", Dean said. Within 15 minutes, other officers arrived.

A neighbour, who would only identify himself by his last name, Hanson, said Long lived with his mother.

A police officer, described as a sheriff's sergeant, and the gunman are among the 13 confirmed to have died. "You don't think it's real - again", he said.

Long used a.45 caliber Glock handgun, which was purchased legally, Dean said.

"We have not found any type of assault rifle inside the location", he said.

Dean said he did not know of Long's motive. He first shot and killed someone working security then entered the building and shot several more people just inside before continuing his killing spree. Helus was a 29 veteran of the force who had planned to retire in the next year.

During Wednesday's shooting, Kelly said he threw two of his friends to the floor and covered them with his body.

Twenty-one victims were treated at local hospitals and had been released by Thursday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

It was not immediately clear what Long did after leaving active duty.

President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting and praised law enforcement officers for their response.

The incident was reported at the Borderline Bar and Grill in the town of Thousand Oaks, a quiet, upscale residential suburb of Los Angeles. "And that's what's really blowing my mind, it's a really safe area".

Numerous patrons were local students from nearby California Lutheran University, ages 19 to 25, attending "College Country Night". More than 100 people were inside the venue at the time of the attack.

Mr Trump said on Twitter that he has been "fully briefed on the bad shooting".

Nicholas Champion was among those who survived both shootings and spoke about his experience to CBS News.
