US Attorney General Jeff Sessions Says Resigning At Trump's Request

Daniel Biss and Renato Mariotti, a former attorney general candidate and CNN legal analyst, condemned Trump and demanded that Whitaker recuse himself from overseeing special counsel Mueller's investigation. Whitaker, who has been a critic of the Russia probe, now has the power to fire Mueller or curb his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. "I could fire everybody right now, but I don't want to stop it because politically I don't like stopping it", Trump said at a stormy White House press conference that was even more tempestuous than the standard he has set.

MoveOn is also heading a petition asking legislatures to protect the investigation, which had reached more than 475,000 signatures as of Thursday evening.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has endured more than a year of criticism from Donald Trump over the Mueller inquiry.

Thanking Sessions for his service, Romney said that it was "imperative that the important work of the Justice Department continues, and that the Mueller investigation proceeds to its conclusion unimpeded".

Whitaker will oversee the Mueller investigation.

Whitaker has given no signs he plans to step back from the probe, saying he is "committed to leading a fair department with the highest ethical standards, that upholds the rule of law, and seeks justice for all Americans".

"He worships him", a longtime friend said of Whitaker and Trump.

"It should end because it's very bad for our country", he said.

Whitaker, however, has made comments skeptical of the Mueller probe.

Under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, Whitaker can serve 210 days without Senate confirmation before the president nominates a permanent attorney general.

Mueller, who had reported to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, now reports to the interim attorney general.

"The forced firing of Attorney General Sessions appears to be part of an ongoing pattern of behavior by the president seeking to undermine (the) investigation into Russian interference", said the letter to Goodlatte, written by Representative Jerrold Nadler, the committee's top Democrat, and 16 other Democrats who sit on the panel.

Whitaker also worked on Sam Clovis's failed campaign for Iowa state treasurer in 2014 after both of them ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate.

"The president's actions have plunged the country into peril", the Democrats added. Whitaker is poised to take over the Russian Federation investigation, a probe he has criticized in the past. "This is a break-the-glass moment", he said. "I just know what I've read and that he was critical in the past of the special counsel's investigations, which obviously raises concerns", King said.

The president promptly ousted Sessions after the midterm elections on Tuesday.

"It's pretty clear the president wanted to make a change and it occurred after the election". It's a job he knows well given that Whitaker has spent the past year as Sessions' chief of staff.

Trump repeatedly lamented that he would have never selected Sessions if he had known the attorney general would recuse himself.

He said that other former Trump associates Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen and Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg are all cooperating with the government, and that the "public needs to see the results" of the probe.

"Donald Trump may think he has the power to hire and fire whomever he pleases, but he can not take such action if it is determined that it is for the purposes of subverting the rule of law and obstructing justice", Nadler said in a statement.

Answering allegations that the White House had used a clip edited by a notorious right-wing conspiracy theorist, Trump spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said: "We stand by our statement".

Trump's relentless attacks on Sessions came even though the Alabama Republican was the first USA senator to endorse Trump and despite the fact his crime-fighting agenda and priorities, particularly his hawkish immigration enforcement policies, largely mirrored the president's.
