The shooting, which also killed a law enforcement officer, took place at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California.

A former Marine - armed with a Glock 21.45-caliber handgun with an illegal extended magazine - opened fire on a packed California country music bar Wednesday night, killing 12 people, including a veteran sheriff's sergeant nearing retirement, officials said.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean choked back tears as he described the sheriff's sergeant killed in a mass shooting at a California bar.

Long then opened fire inside the bar, where he exchanged shots with Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer. He died at the hospital.

Authorities found the gunman dead inside an office adjacent to the bar's entryway, Dean said.

"He gave his all ... he went in to save lives, to save other people", Dean said.

Before getting the news of his death, his father said he was fearful his son "went toward the action" because he's someone who would "run toward a bully to stand up for others". It was college night at the Borderline Bar & Grill, a popular country western bar.

Police said hundreds were inside when the shooting occurred. Others jumped over chairs and broke windows to get out of the bar. It also came less than two weeks after a gunman massacred 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Here's what we know of Long so far.

In yet another unusual coincidence, one of the victims to be named in the Vegas shooting was Susan Smith from Simi Valley which is only miles from the site of the Borderline shooting.

"We are consistently ranked one of the highest with respect to lowest crime rate per capita, we're proud of that", Thousand Oaks mayor, Andy Fox, told CNN.

"Sergeant [Ron Helus] was on the force for 29 years, was looking to retire in the next year or so and has survived by his wife and son", Sheriff Dean said.

The 23-year-old "heroically saved lives" during the shooting before his death, the school said.

By the time they entered the bar again the gunfire had stopped, and they found 12 people dead inside, including Helus and the gunman.

When deputies arrived at the scene three minutes after the first 911 call, shots were still being fired, Dean said.

"We have called in our bomb team to go through and a couple of bomb dogs here that are checking the area", Dean said.

Tayler Whitler, 19, said she was on the dance floor with her friends nearby when she saw the gunman shooting and heard screams to "get down".
