'Business interests' could force F1 to leave Silverstone - Bratches

This is the ideal formula for Grand Prix racing and I look forward to this becoming a real highlight of the F1 calendar.

"Most of our grands prix are now half an hour to an hour outside cities, so the race in Hanoi fulfills of one of our preliminary goals - an iconic city hosting racing on a potentially thrilling street circuit".

At recent deal with Vietnam indicates Liberty's plans to bring the sport to the people in major cities, and Bratches aims to find a balance between heritage and street events.

Now 12th in the driver's standings, Sainz's best performance in 79 Grand Prix races is a 4th place finish.

Silverstone, host of the inaugural World Championship race in 1950, has been a permanent fixture on the calendar since 1987, having previously alternated with Brands Hatch.

Vietnam announced last week it will host the race in its communist capital from April 2020, becoming only the third Southeast Asian nation to host the Formula One after Malaysia and Singapore.

According to a BBC analysis the race in Vietnam "is part of F1's bid to expand interest in the sport".

He added: "We look at it in three ways". "Firstly, we want to preserve the heritage races".

Ecclestone told Reuters previous year that he had talks with the Vietnamese about a race while he was in charge but had decided, despite the money on offer, against it because he felt there were enough in that part of the world already.

"Then we have a set of street races and hybrid street races, where we race in parks and on city streets, such as Melbourne, Montreal and Mexico City".

Vietnam will also become F1's fourth street race joining Monaco, Singapore and Azerbaijan with its unique 22-turn, 5.565 km track.

Bratches said Hanoi fitted the new vision of the sport's owners, with another street race in Miami also in the pipeline.

"One of the things we have been intensely focused on is extending grand prix racing to iconic cities, in downtown areas, where we can best engage fans", he said.

"We are thrilled to be here in Hanoi, one of the most exciting cities in the world right now with such a rich history and an incredible future ahead of it". I don't think we want to provide a lot of "inside the tent" commentary on active discussions.
