"I don't hide from history".

Macron, who has spent the past week touring former battlefields of eastern and northern France, met May in Albert near the Belgian border for a working lunch as pressure to reach a deal on Britain's European Union exit mounts.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the war this weekend, Macron will welcome world leaders including US President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

The French presidency later said that only the five top military chiefs who are interred in the Invalides will be individually honored and have their names cited in the ceremony -not including Petain. "If there was confusion, it was because we were not clear enough on that point", Griveaux said.

Macron will not attend the military ceremony.

But his comments drew fire from the opposition as well as Jewish leaders on a still painful chapter in France's history.

"Every aggression perpetrated against one of our citizens because they are Jewish echoes like the breaking of new crystal", the French prime minister wrote on Facebook, referring to the start of the Nazi drive to wipe out Jews on November 9, 1938, also known as the Night of Broken Glass.

"Macron, this time you've gone too far!" He quoted Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French forces in the Second World War and the nation's universal hero, as saying of Petain in 1966 that "the glory he earned in Verdun. can be neither contested nor go unrecognised by the nation".

French politicians voiced outrage and a sense of weariness at Mr Macron's repeated gaffes, with far-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon capturing the sense of indignity.

"It is shocking that France can pay tribute to a man deemed unworthy of being French in a trial held in the name of the people", said Francis Kalifat, president of Crif, the body that represents France's 400,000-strong Jewish community.

He also earned soldiers' admiration by advocating strategies which avoided pointless fighting and deaths - though he nonetheless condoned the execution of attempted deserters.

But as head of the Vichy regime, he actively collaborated with the Nazi occupiers, pursuing French resistance fighters while enacting second-class status for Jews and helping German soldiers round them up for the death camps.

After the war's end he was arrested for treason and given the death sentence, which was commuted into life imprisonment given his age. He died in 1951, aged 95.

The debate over his legacy reflects a longtime divide along political lines, with rightwing groups often praising Petain's endorsement of what he considered traditional Catholic values.

As head of Vichy France, he replaced the country's motto of "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity" with the more paternalistic "Work, Family and Country".
