Microsoft Word gets AI-powered to-do lists and collaboration feature

In an announcement blog post, Microsoft says distractions can hamper progress and being in the flow can create focus. When this happens, you likely do what research tells us many Word users do: "leave a placeholder in your document and come back to it later to stay in your flow".

"Word has always been the standard for creating professional-quality documents", Microsoft corporate vice president Jared Spataro explains.

Office Insiders on the Mac have access to a new feature this week in the form of an intelligent and automatic to-do list generator. By tapping on an item on the list, you'll automatically be redirected to the location of that placeholder in the document where you can continue where you left off.

On the off chance that you type things like "todo" or " insert something here " in a Word document, Editor will perceive the content and make a list dependent on the things. These are all presented as links that can be clicked to navigate to the exact spot in the document.

Users would have to mention them within a placeholder and Word would send them a notification with a deep link to the relevant place in the document so that they are able to insert their contributions which would be added directly into the document, Spataro added.

Once Word automatically creates these placeholders in a document, the app will keep track of all of them and also display them on a dedicated panel when users come back to the document. "Soon, they'll be able to reply to the notification with their contributions, and those contributions will be inserted directly into the document-making it easy to complete the task with an email from any device". Microsoft plans to launch for other Office apps later. This is still a Fast Ring release so is still some way off reaching all users.

This AI-powered To-Do feature is available today in the latest Insider build of Office for Mac, and it's coming soon to Word for Windows and the web.
