"We won't protect Europeans if we don't decide to have a real European army", Macron said.

On Tuesday, the French president said Europe needed a real army to reduce reliance on the U.S. for defense.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has embarked on a three-day visit to France on Friday.

"Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, which the USA subsidizes greatly", Trump said on Twitter as he arrived in France to meet with Macron. Europe is the "main victim" of Trump's decision, Macron said in remarks made as he toured World War I battlefields ahead of the centenary of the November 11 armistice, according to the Wall Street Journal.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump have departed Washington for a weekend in Paris, where world leaders are gathering to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the end of World War I.

Both Trump and Mr Macron are scheduled to meet on Saturday morning at the French President's official residence, Élysée Palace, in Paris.

For Sunday's anniversary, Mr Trump is to join world leaders at a ceremony in the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe.

Mr. Trump and Macron's early relationship was marked by kisses, frequent meetings and marathon power handshakes. Since the beginning of his term, Trump has been urging US NATO allies in Europe to up their defense spending. "I think the enduring lesson (of World War I) for the United States is that when you become a global power. you have global interests to protect", Bolton said.

The trip comes as the White House looks to grapple with a new political reality of Democrats taking the House in Tuesday's midterm elections and the fallout from the president's sudden firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

But the relationship-building failed to persuade Trump to remain in the global climate change agreement or Iran deals and did nothing to protect France from USA tariffs.

The White House and the Kremlin had previously considered a formal meeting in Paris.

"Faced with Russian Federation, which is near our borders and has shown it could be threatening - I want to build a real security dialog with Russian Federation, which is a country I respect, a European country - but we must have a Europe that can defend itself on its own without relying only on the United States".

The French president, who tried but failed earlier this year to talk Trump out of withdrawing from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, has also voiced worries about the impact of sanctions on European companies doing business with Iran.
