A home burns as the Camp Fire rages through Paradise Calif. on Thursday Nov. 8 2018

People reported much of the community of 30,000 people has gone up in flames, including homes, supermarkets, businesses, restaurants, schools and a retirement centre.

"The town is devastated, everything is destroyed", said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott Maclean.

As people fled in cars, some abandoned their vehicles, running from encroaching flames as they held babies and pets in their arms, said Gina Oviedo, who described a devastating scene as she evacuated the town of Paradise.

Abandoned vehicles sit at a auto lot in Paradise, north of Sacramento, California on November 09, 2018.

On Saturday, in Los Angeles County, the 14,164 hectares Woolsey Fire was threatening 75,000 homes and more than 200,000 people were under mandatory evacuation early on Saturday.

Rural areas fared little better.

McLean estimated that the lost buildings numbered in the thousands in Paradise, about 290 kilometers (180 miles) northeast of San Francisco. Several evacuation centers were set up in nearby towns. 'People started getting out of their vehicles and running'.

While the cause of the fire wasn't known, Pacific Gas & Electric Company told state regulators it experienced an outage on an electrical transmission line near Paradise about 15 minutes before the blaze broke out.

Thick gray smoke and ash filled the sky above Paradise and could be seen from miles away.

By all accounts, the scrambled evacuation of Paradise was harrowing.

'It's devastating. It's like "welcome to hell,"' resident Cynthia Ball said about the dual disasters while she was outside the teenage centre serving as a shelter for evacuees.

Some of the patients were initially turned around during their evacuation because of gridlocked traffic and later airlifted to other hospitals, along with some staff, Kinney said.

"Due to the burn injuries, identification could not be immediately made", the office said in a statement released Friday.

Chico police officer John Barker and his partner evacuated several seniors from an apartment complex.

Sonoma Valley firefighters inspect burned out cars to make sure they are clear of human remains following a fire through a neighborhood, Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, in Paradise, California.

"We're trying to get as many people out as quickly as possible and save as many lives as we can", he said.

"We're just hoping that our brand new home that we were hoping to move into tomorrow is not burned to the ground", Winstead said. "We're anxious sick. They do have a vehicle, but they both are older and can be confused at times". Acting California Governor Gavin Newsom has requested an emergency presidential disaster declaration from Trump to speed the flow of federal aid to victims.

The warm Santa Ana winds remained strong Friday morning, with gusts as high as 70 miles per hour forecast in certain regions around the two southern fires.

On Friday, the flames jumped Highway 101 and headed into coastal areas. By Thursday evening, it had scorched up to 7,000 acres and sent residents of more than 1,200 homes fleeing. He said he thought he could save her house, but they would only watch helplessly as their home burned. But winds are blamed for pushing the fire through scenic canyon communities and ridgetop homes. Authorities shut down the 101 Freeway in both directions at Camarillo Springs Road.
