David Pearson, NASCAR Hall of Famer with 105 wins, dies at 83

David Pearson, who died on Monday at the age of 83, won 105 NASCAR Cup Series races in just 574 career starts and will forever be a legend of the sport. Pearson also took home the 1976 Daytona 500 trophy in what many define as his signature win. Wood Brothers Racing, Pearson's former team, confirmed the news on social media.

"Richard has always acknowledged that David was his toughest competitor on the track. The answer has always been David Pearson", Petty said. His career paralleled Petty's and the two combined for 63 finishes in which the two finished first and second to each other.

"It wasn't a rivalry, but more mutual respect". He pushed me just as much as I pushed him on the track.

The pair collided at the final corner on the last lap, with both cars badly damaged but Pearson able to get going and cross the line victorious. "We will miss those trips".

He continued to race part-time with a variety of teams into the 1980s, taking his final win at Darlington with Hoss-Ellington in '80.

Pearson attempted a return with Wood Brothers as an injury substitute for Neil Bonnett three years later, but after physical discomfort in testing chose to officially call time on his career as he felt he "couldn't run a 500-mile race and do justice to myself and the Wood Brothers".

NASCAR chairman and CEO Jim France said Pearson's contribution to the category's growth had been enormous.

Pearson was a three-time Cup champion and his 105 career victories trail only Petty's 200 on NASCAR's all-time list. "In addition to his three championships, he'll forever have a special place in our hearts with his connection to Charlotte Motor Speedway", said Marcus Smith, Speedway Motorsports President and CEO.

"The man they called the "Silver Fox" was the gold standard for NASCAR excellence".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Pearson family and friends".
