Unclaimed 3 weeks after winning Someone in South Carolina won the record $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot

Officials say the winning ticket was sold in SC.

The $1.5 billion Mega Millions prize has still not been claimed three weeks after the victor was announced.

South Carolina's WLTX reported that the winning ticket was sold in the town of Simpsonville. The retailer that sold the ticket gets a $50,000 cut once the prize is claimed.

They have until April 21.

The Oct. 23 drawing produced a jackpot-winning ticket in SC.

A victor has 180 days, or about six months, to claim their prize, giving the ticket-buyer until April 21 to officially become America's newest billionaire.

The owner of the convenience store CJ Patel said last month that he had no idea who bought the winning ticket. He estimated between 10 to 15 visitors a day.

The victor would only become an actual billionaire by taking the prize in annual installments over three decades and hanging on to the bulk of the money.

But gaming officials in SC say the victor still hasn't come forward yet.

The lottery, however, does not know if the victor took that advice or why no one has spoken up.

The South Carolina Education Lottery advises the victor to place the ticket in a safe location and speak with a trusted financial adviser. "Take a deep breath and enjoy the moment!" the South Carolina Education Lottery tweeted at the time.

If the victor doesn't claim the money, it could go back into the game's prize pool or be given to South Carolina's development programs and plans funded by Mega Millions' profits.
