Shohei Ohtani was rewarded for a Ruthian season at the plate - and on the mound.

Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. was named the 2018 National League Rookie of the Year on Monday night. "So that's something I need to work on, and that's going to be one of my goals, to stay healthy for a long full season and be able to the team win from day one". In 433 plate appearances across 111 games, the 20-year-old outfielder either led or tied for first among NL rookies in homers (26), slugging percentage (.552) and WAR (3.7).

A torn ligament in his right elbow in June cut short dreams of a full season in both roles, but the work he produced before the injury and in a late-season comeback as a hitter with a brief mound return showed his wonderful dual role skill.

Buehler, a 23-year-old right-hander, was 8-5 with a 2.62 ERA in 23 starts and one relief appearance.

Ohtani will serve as a full-time hitter in 2019, as he underwent Tommy John surgery the day after the regular season ended. New York Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar was second with five firsts and 89 points, and Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres was next with 25 points.

Ohtani posted a 4-2 record with a 3.31 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 11 Ks per nine innings, but injured the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and did not pitch after June 6.

"Of course, getting hurt is never a good thing", he said.

Ohtani is the fourth Japanese-born player to win Rookie of the Year honors, and the third in the American League along with Kazuhiro Sasaki (2000) and Ichiro Suzuki (2001). Ohtani became the first player with 15 homers as a batter and 50 strikeouts as a pitcher in the same season.

The 20-year-old Acuna received 27 first-place votes and three seconds for 144 points.

The dynamic Venezuelan outfielder easily outdistanced Washington outfielder Juan Soto, who got two first-place votes, and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler, who got the other.

Ohtani and Acuna were the only major league rookies with at least 20 homers and 10 stolen bases each this year.

Acuna started the season at Triple-A and made his debut on April 25, the youngest player in the majors then at 20 years, 128 days.

Acuna was especially strong during the second half of the season, where he hit.322 with 19 homers and a 1.028 OPS.

Acuna's eight leadoff home runs are a Braves franchise record.
