"It's been a long, long journey with lots of ups and downs", she told the British news outlet.

A Syrian refugee who lived for seven months in the transit area of Kuala Lumpur airport, followed by two months in a Malaysian detention centre, has arrived in B.C.

He was blocked from entering Malaysia due to visa issues but was barred from travelling to other countries. "I'm sorry for that", the smiling 36-year-old said in a Twitter video on Monday, looking exhausted and stroking his bushy beard.

"For the last 10 months, it has been very hard, cold".

Last month the former insurance marketing manager was detained by immigration officials who said they wanted to deport him back to his war-torn homeland, which he last visited in 2008.

A Syrian national who has been living in limbo in a Malaysian airport says he is on his way to Vancouver.

Arriving in Vancouver, he was greeted by Laurie Cooper, who with the help of fellow residents from Whistler ski resort and the British Muslim Association, brought him to Canada and raised almost $15,000 (£8,865) for a fresh start.

Malaysia's immigration office said it had held talks "on the basis of concern and humanity.with the embassy of the country that agreed to receive his relocation", without naming Canada.

"Today, I'm in Taiwan International Airport, tomorrow, I will be reaching my final destination, Vancouver, Canada", Hassal Al Kontar said in a Twitter video on Monday. When rejected from a Turkish Airlines flight at the Kuala Lumpur airport, Al Kontar had no option but to remain at the airport since March. "I could not do it without the support and prayers from of all of you".

"I've done my time in airports, no more airports", he told CBC.

In the video, he said vaguely: "For now, it's not important where I have been or what went on".

He will be greeted by a group of supporters and then travel to Whistler, where a job is waiting for him.

He gained online fame when he posted videos of his life at the airport terminal on social media, which subsequently attracted the attention of human rights groups and the media.

In 2015 an Iraqi family spent more than two months in an empty smoking cubicle in a Moscow airport, relying on passengers to bring them food and water.

Hassan's plight also drew comparison with the character played by Tom Hanks in the 2004 film The Terminal.

Millions of Syrians have fled a devastating seven-year civil war that has left more than 350,000 people dead.
