Beyoncé among stars at Johannesburg concert to honour Mandela

Days before performing at the event, Beyonce penned an appreciative letter to the late Mandela.

Washington D.C. [USA], Dec 03 (ANI): Leading an all-star line up, American singer Beyonce honoured the life and legacy of former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela at the Global Citizen Festival on Sunday (local time).

Global Citizen, an advocacy group, campaigns for an end to extreme poverty, and other causes. Many members of the audience got tickets to the concert through charity work.

She said menacing men made eye contact with some concert-goers, as though to say, '"You could be next,"' and that there were no police in sight.

"People's bags are getting snatched, people are losing their phones, people are fighting in the midst of us looking for an Uber", a reveller said in a video posted on YouTube.

Two days after the historic Global Citizen Festival at FNB Stadium, CCTV footage has emerged that shows the extent of the hours-long crime spree at a Sasol garage opposite the venue. "Some guys were walking around with knives and screwdrivers, threatening people", he said.

"We have learnt that only one incident was formally reported, which goes in stark contrast to the many reports surfacing all over media", Sun said.

The organisers of the Global Citizen Festival have insisted that the safety of guests was "always of paramount importance" after scores of people were attacked outside the stadium on Sunday, December 2. "The fact that we arrested a suspect immediately after the robbery took place highlights the presence of police at Sasol garage", Naidoo said.

World leaders previously gathered at the stadium in 2013 for a memorial after the death of Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader who was also South Africa's first black president.
