Fiat Chrysler reportedly plans to open a new Jeep assembly plant in Detroit by reviving an idled engine plant, just weeks after General Motors announced it was cutting 15 percent of its North American workforce and halting production at several factories.

News of the Fiat Chrysler's new plant leaked on the same day General Motors Co Chief Executive Mary Barra was finishing a two-day visit in Washington with lawmakers furious over the carmaker's plan to close five North American assembly plants next year and cut up to 15,000 jobs due to weak demand for sedans and small cars in the USA market. According to the anonymous sources cited by The Detroit News, the Jeep that's going to be built at the refreshed Mack Avenue plant is a three-row 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, something we first heard about back in June. Fiat Chrysler and other automakers have been shifting production away from sedans toward SUVs as consumers favor larger vehicles.

According to U.S. media, the plant would start producing its Jeep sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in 2020, and create up to 400 jobs. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan has not been made public. The Mack Avenue Engine II plant will employ 100 to 400 people, the newspaper said.

"[Fiat Chrysler] is essentially out of capacity", Jeff Schuster, an analyst with LMC Automotive, told the Detroit News. GM's moves drew fierce blowback from Washington, including President Donald Trump.

The company's plans for Detroit came as GM CEO Mary Barra testified on Capitol Hill about the closures, during which lawmakers asked her to keep the plants open. Trump has promised more jobs in the auto industry.
