On the backdrop of the Kedarnath pilgrimage, the film reportedly portrays a Hindu woman played by Sara Ali Khan falling for a Muslim guide essayed by Sushant Rajput whereas the pony walas in Uttarakhand are Nepali Hindus and not Muslims. Kedarnath is the debut film of Sara Ali Khan.

The screening of Kedarnath has been banned as a precautionary measure to avoid "disruption of peace".

The decision has been taken by district magistrates concerned in view of the situation prevailing in their areas, ADG (law and order) Ashok Kumar said on Friday.

Following this, all the DM's have banned the film's release in their districts. The court told Bharti to raise its objections with Maharaj's committee. These districts are Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Tehri, Nainital, Udhamsingh Nagar and Almora.

Earlier, Ajendra Ajay, a state BJP leader demanded that the film should be banned.

In spite of the receiving clearance from the government, the film has been banned in 7 districts of Uttarakhand. The Gujarat High court called the action a publicity stunt and the extreme Hindu outfits are making it a big issue.

State Congress spokesperson Garima Mehra Dasauni said that while the Congress is in favour of promoting shooting in Uttarakhand, it is important to ensure that the said movie does not hurt religious sentiments.

Produced by Ronnie Screwvala's RSVP and Pragya Kapoor's Guy In the Sky Pictures, Kedarnath is directed by Abhishek Kapoor and has released successfully today. Priests from the shrine-town were wildly protesting against the film, saying that it is a case of "love-jihad", as the two lead characters are Hindu and Muslim, who fall in love.
