The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for southwestern Virginia in Dickenson and Buchanan counties and nearby McDowell County in West Virginia. The situation will begin to pick up Saturday afternoon, with larger accumulations Sunday into early Monday morning.

Both the National Weather Service (NWS) and Brad Panovich say that snow is on the way, starting earlier than Sunday, but the bulk of the weather event will happen Sunday into Monday and possibly Tuesday.

The latest estimates show less snow and ice than what the NWS office in Greer, S.C., called for in Charlotte on Friday, when they predicted 9 inches of snow and 0.13 inches of ice.

WHAT... Moderate to heavy snow possible.

About 1 to 2 inches of snow could fall in the higher elevations of North Georgia, with up to 5 inches on the highest ridges Sunday night into Monday. Most of the remaining region along or south of United States 460 is under a Winter Storm Watch. Winter storm watches and winter weather advisories are also in effect for sections of the southern Plains across the Mid-South as well as parts of northern SC and southwest Virginia.

Snowfall in these areas could also top 6 inches.

The storm starts around midnight Sunday with snow.

We might see some snow in the Tri-Cities this weekend, followed by freezing rain.

Ocean County, as well as portions of Atlantic and Burlington counties, may see some light snow Wednesday. The storm on Monday probably will move out to sea, but it also could turn and climb up the East Coast, bringing heavy snow to major metro areas.

"We're preparing for days of impact, not hours", Cooper said. Precipitation could transition to a wintry mix in a few locations late tonight, but only minor snow or ice accumulations are expected through tonight.

Areas under the winter weather advisory like Sussex, Surry, Southampton County and the city of Franklin could see 1-3 inches. Warmer air in this scenario would reduce snow accumulation. Rainfall will be between 2 to 3 inches with some areas receiving even more. There is also the possibility that Diego could bring a foot or more of snow to Asheville, North Carolina.

"1-2" of rain is possible overall for coastal Virginia and North Carolina.
