An American student living in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam has been stabbed to death in her apartment and police are preparing to arraign her rommate suspected in the death.

Sarah Papenheim, 21, was found dying in her lodgings in the city's Kralingen district on Wednesday, and armed police later seized a suspect in another city.

Papenheim's brother died of suicide just three years ago, and she'd chose to focus her studies on suicide in her brother's memory, her mom told the outlet. "She played with some of the best musicians on the scene in the Twin Cities [Minneapolis-St Paul] and had many close relationships with them".

Pappenheim's 23-year-old roommate, who's not named, was captured at a train station in Eindhoven, about 70 miles east of Rotterdam.

Papenheim was prominent in the Minneapolis music scene as a popular jazz drummer.

"The university is shocked by this bad incident and is taking care of upset students and employees and will act towards relatives according to our protocols". Odegard advised Papenheim to get out - but her daughter refused, saying she was his "only friend". Police say a 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in her death. Police tried unsuccessfully to revive her after arriving at her home following reports of an argument. "Not just be that girl drummer but be an excellent female drummer and she did that very well". "My only two kids, and I've lost them both", she told the Star Tribune.

"After she told me that I thought he got mad at some people".

"The thing that is going through my head is that she was coming home for Christmas", musician George Moye, who often shared the stage with Papenheim when she was home, told WCCO.

Authorities are searching for a motive after an American college student is stabbed to death while studying overseas in the Netherlands.

"It's so unbelievable", he said. Pryor, a 19-year-old keyboardist, said he and Papenheim met at a jam session a few years ago and immediately connected due to their young ages and love of music.

"Our deepest condolences go out to all Sarah's family and friends at this poignant time", Erasmus University said in a statement.

"From day one, she picked up everything". Mental health officials had also visited the apartment in recent days, she said.

"We had talked about being like a counselor, a grief counselor or something like that", Kresko said. "She always worked with a smile, all day long, no problem". A Gofundme page for donations has raised over $22,000 (U.S.).
