Trump Is Losing the Shutdown Fight in a Rout

Incoming acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said Democrats are no longer negotiating with the administration over an offer made back on Saturday to accept less than the $5 billion Trump wants for a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border. She can not be seen by her party as being weak on negotiating with Donald Trump.

Trump's demand for money to build the border wall and Democrats' refusal to give him what he wants has caused a partial government shutdown that is almost a week old.

President Trump threatened to close the southern border if Democrats continue obstructing border wall funding. Only a few lawmakers presided over the brief sessions, while congressional leaders and rank-and-file members were nearly entirely absent.

"It's clear Pelosi is more interested in preserving her speakership than having an open government and a secure border", the White House official said. "Do the Dems realize that most of the people not getting paid are Democrats?"

Earlier Thursday, when the House gaveled in for a few minutes, Rep. Jim McGovern loudly asked for unanimous consent to bring up the Senate-passed legislation to avoid a partial shutdown, the same legislation Trump has refused to support. We build a Wall or close the Southern Border. Republicans have only 51 seats, so they will need to try to persuade some Democrats to back the measure.

Earlier this week, Trump claimed that numerous federal workers were OK with the shutdown.

The House and Senate adjourned Thursday after brief pro forma sessions and made plans to reconvene Monday, essentially punting any action to end the partial government shutdown until next week as negotiators remain far from an agreement.

Roberts said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, of NY, and other Democrats need to come up with an "appropriate number" and language for border security funding that Trump will sign. In addition, he said the US would be cutting off aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador because of a new migrant caravan that has formed in Honduras.

Trump is sticking with his demand for money to build a border wall with Mexico, and Democrats, who take control of the House on January 3, are refusing to give him what he wants.
