New Zealand vs Sri Lanka

New Zealand completed their demolition of Sri Lanka on day five of the second Test in Christchurch on Sunday, needing only 14 balls to take the last three wickets for a colossal 423-run victory.

With time more important than runs for Sri Lanka, the pair put on 65 as they batted through the morning session.

It was a worthy way to bring up another major milestone - a fourth straight test series victory, the first time New Zealand have accomplished that feat.

Captain Kane Williamson had a license to produce some attacking fields, and did so, leaving cover open for large portions of the day to tempt the batsmen, and also producing some legside fields for the trademark short ball barrage. I suppose getting into a groove, a couple of wickets gives you a bit of confidence and just lets you go about your thing. "I suppose just making the most of the conditions I guess", Boult told Fox Sports.

After resuming at 4-88 in reply to New Zealand's 178, Sri Lanka was all out for 104 in the space of nine overs, giving New Zealand a 74-run lead.

Boult said he felt some frustration when the wickets weren't coming, though he felt he was bowling well.

To win would require a record performance with the highest Test fourth innings being 654 for five by England against South Africa in 1939.

Sri Lanka had been set the target late on Friday after Tom Latham (176) and Henry Nicholls (162 not out) drove New Zealand's second innings to 585 for four declared.

Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Chameera and Lahiru Kumara all misread Boult and went quickly leg before wicket without scoring to end the innings.

Mendis, who helped save the first Test with Mathews with an unbroken 274-run partnership, appeared well set to repeat the dose with Chandimal on Saturday as they thwarted New Zealand for the entire first session.

"We are a young team, but if we can show the same character as Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews then we should be able to compete".
