Legendary audio tech company Technics has returned to the world of DJ turntables after nine long years in the wilderness, with the launch of the new SL-1200 MK7 at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. The EAH-F70N adds a wearing sensor that stops playback when you take them off, an ambient sound enhancer that allows the wearer to hear outside sounds just by touching the outside and hybrid active noise cancelling.

The new direct drive turntable comes in the classic Technics black. Panasonic ceased production in 2010, having ended on the SL-1200 MK6 model, before resurrecting Technics turntables in 2016 with the launch of the high-end SL-1200G and SL-1200GAE.

But all those new turntables were aimed squarely at the high-end hi-fi market - with the prices to match.

What all of this means to the average DJ will depend hugely on the price point Technics assign to the SL-1200mk7. The SL-1200 MK's finish is matte black and features an all-black tonearm.

The improved direct drive motor reportedly has increased "rotation accuracy, powerful torque [and] high reliability. eliminating the need for parts replacement and maintenance", according to Panasonic's press release. Technics has used motor control technology developed for Panasonic Blu-ray players to ensure that rotation is consistent and the decks respond to stop/start and scratching.

Vibration is further reduced by the aluminium die-cast chassis, which is rigidly integrated with a special material that consists of ABS mixed with glass fibre.

Other handy features include detachable power/phono cables - the terminals are gold-plated to minimise sound quality degradation - and adjustable starting torque and brake speed.
