Health officials in Alabama encourage vaccination as flu is widespread likely to increase

Since September, PHAC says 414 children under age 16 have been hospitalized for flu, with the highest estimated rate of admission among kids under five years of age. Typically, the Atlantic province begins seeing a surge of flu in late December, following the close-quarters socializing of the Christmas holidays when the virus finds lots of hosts to infect.

Dr Kevin Kelleher, HSE Assistant National Director, Health Protection, said that Ireland had now entered the flu season. H3N2, the strain largely responsible for last year's outbreak, has so far been less common than the H1N1 strain.

With illness spreading and months of flu season left to go, experts still recommend getting a flu shot.

THE HSE has urged Limerick people in at-risk groups for the flu to get vaccinated, as the number of cases are expected to increase in the coming weeks. Data suggests that more people got vaccinated earlier this year than they did last year, perhaps motivated by memories of the prior season.

The flu is a contagious respiratory disease caused by influenza viruses and can cause mild to severe symptoms.

Two more flu deaths in San Diego County have brought this season's death toll to 11, county health officials announced Wednesday.

The most effective way to protect against the flu is to get a dose of seasonal flu vaccine.

Cameron Kaiser said the victim had not received a flu shot and did not have any known pre-existing health disorders.

The child, whose identity was not disclosed, was from the southwest county area and was taken to a hospital outside the county, where the death occurred last week, according to Riverside University Health System officials.
