Green Book director Peter Farrelly says he's deeply sorry and embarrassed after film website The Cut found an old story where colleagues said Farrelly liked to flash his genitals as a joke

The acclaimed director issued a statement through his publicists saying the stories' descriptions are true.

This "joke" flashing went down on the There's Something About Mary set, and both Cameron Diaz and film executive Tim Rothman told Newsweek that they fell prey to the trick.

In an Observer article from that same year, Peter explained how he and his brother would have carried out such a prank: "We do a joke where, it's like, Bob says, 'Pete's been really insane, he went out and spent $500 on a belt buckle.' I'll go, 'Bob, it's an investment, it's not a big deal.' He says, 'You're stupid! I did this decades ago and I thought I was being amusing and the truth is I'm embarrassed and it makes me cringe now", the director said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. Diaz is also quoted in the piece as saying, "When a director shows you his penis the first time you meet him, you've got to recognize the creative genius".

The Farrelly brothers are best known for comedies including Dumb and Dumber, Shallow Hal, Kingpin and There's Something About Mary.

"We did it before she was [signed on to star]", Farrelly said.

The film won Best Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy), with writers Nick Vallelonga, Bryan Currie and Farrelly winning Best Screenplay. In fact, in 2017 he became the first Muslim to ever win the Best Actor Oscar after he took home the gold for his performance in Best Picture victor "Moonlight".

Critics claim that the pair's friendship was exaggerating and other details about the film have been questioned, in particular by some of Shirley's surviving relatives.

The movie has already picked up three Golden Globes for best comedy or musical film and best supporting actor for Ali.

Farrelly was also nominated for Best Director but lost out to Alfonso Curaón who directed Roma.

'I'll tell you why, because no matter what I say, I'm going to lose half the audience, and I want everybody to see this. "I saw it, as you did, possibly on local CBS news".
