"Who would not like to have Mourinho?".

The 55-year-old was dismissed on December 18 after two-and-a-half seasons in charge.

Bruno Lage has been appointed the interim manager for the Portuguese side at the Stadium of Light, with the Eagles seven points behind league leaders Porto.

"I have never confirmed, nor denied any offers throughout my career", he added.

"There are things that have been said and I do not want to feed those rumours", he said, "but when a player or coach is asked to come back to a club it means they did something positive there".

"I don't really want to go there but the best way to respect a great club [Benfica] and a great president is to say that I was not approached. But to help end all the speculation on this subject, I will say that at this moment, today, I have no intention of working in Portugal".

Jose Mourinho has said it would be a "tremendous honour" to manage one of his former clubs, amid links with a return to either Inter Milan or Real Madrid.

Jose Mourinho is now without a job after being sacked as Manchester United manager last month. "I am fine at the moment".

The Daily Mail reports that a source close to Mourinho - whose contract was due to run till the end of the 2019/20 campaign with the option of an extra season -revealed that compensation had been paid.

Nearly as soon as Jose took his marching orders from Old Trafford last month the former Manchester United boss has been linked with a return to Real.

The Sun reports that United agreed to the payment following a meeting between Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes and United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

"I have learned that, when you leave a club, you don't go around talking about it, you don't wash your dirty laundry in public".

Mourinho is said to have rejected the chance to return to his former club, deeming it too early in his career for a return to Portugal.

Interestingly for a man who operates on something of a scorched earth policy when things are going badly for him in a job, the Portuguese manager has been nearly exclusively linked with clubs that he has already managed.
