People Who Use Someone Else's Netflix Password, We've Got Bad News

Netflix password sharing could be a thing of the past

Netflix password sharing could be a thing of the past

This week at CES 2019 in Las Vegas, video software provider Synamedia revealed new technology that could help put an end to account sharing.

If you and your friends all share a Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or any other streaming account in order to save some money, things might be getting a little more hard for you in the years to come.

British firm Synamedia uses machine learning to spot shared passwords on streaming services like Netflix and HBO and rat out offending users.

Each service can choose to deal with rule-breakers as they please, for instance by sending them an email asking them to upgrade to a premium service or even shutting down their account.

If someone has illegally sold their password online to multiple people, they could be turned in to the police.

Synamedia's AI software analyzes which users are logged in at any current moment and then flag those accounts that are being shared, the Daily Mail reports.

According to research, around 26 percent of millennials share their log-in information for streaming services. A study from Parks Associates concluded that, by 2021, credentials sharing could account for $9.9 billion in losses for pay-TV revenues and $1.2 billion in OTT revenues. There's no sign of whether or not any streaming services will want to employ the new technology.

Synamedia CTO Jean-Marc Racine said, 'A typical pattern would be you have a subscriber that is simultaneously watching content on the East Coast and West Coast of the US.

The system can work out if the service is being used in a "wrong" location - and knows when people are using it in their homes or holiday homes, for example. Many casual users will be happy to pay an additional fee for a premium, shared service with a greater number of concurrent users.

Synamedia says the system has already begun trials, though no official release date has been set.

"It's a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream".
