Samsung Users Shocked To Find They Can’t Delete Facebook

Want to delete Facebook? Too bad

Given the revelations about how the Facebook app tracks its users and harvests data, that might not be an acceptable compromise for a lot of users.

A rather interesting piece of info surfaced on Bloomberg recently, it seems like some users can not delete Facebook from Samsung's smartphones. T-Mobile also lists a host of Google apps pre-installed on the phone, including YouTube, Gmail and Chrome. He used Facebook for some time to get in touch with friends and share his works with others, but at some point, Winke made a decision to get off of Facebook and tried to remove the app from his phone. So it no longer collects data or sends information back to the company. You can usually customize your phone, removing and adding apps as you like, though some are immutable; iPhone users couldn't remove certain annoying pre-loaded iPhone apps like Stocks until 2016.

Many parents, this one included, have decided that their children should not use any form of social media, including IM apps such as Whatsapp, due to the threat they pose to their mental health. But even if phone companies want to make it easier for people to use a phone immediately after they take it out of the box, the companies should at least allow people to delete pre-installed apps. "We the consumer should have [a] say in what we want and don't want on our products".

Whether any given Samsung device includes the permanent version of Facebook or not depends on agreements made between the social media giant and phone manufacturers. Facebook's spokesperson did, however, say that if you disable the app on your phone, it acts as if it's uninstalled, so it can not collect data or anything of the sort, which is something Mr. Winke was concerned about, and probably at least a part of the reason why he wanted to delete that app from his smartphone. Only a few, if at all, of the pre-installed apps can be removed completely from the device. There is no complete list available online, and consumers may not know if Facebook is pre-loaded unless they specifically ask a customer service representative when they purchase a phone. However, Samsung told Bloomberg that the pre-installed Facebook app doesn't run anymore once the user has disabled it.

Consumer-advocacy groups have been skeptical of such arrangements for years, according to Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy. He first tried to delete the Facebook app when he was setting up the device.

"Very slimy. Been a Samsung customer for 10 years".

One such app, called the Samsung Mobile, required permission to access 36 types of information about you and your friends on Facebook. I recently did a factory reset of my old Samsung Galaxy S7 in order to bequeath it to my son.
