A picture, which has since gone viral, shows a group of white pupils at the school sitting together while their four black classmates sit at a small table near the door.

The school principal apparently told parents she was not aware of the situation.

A task team from the provincial education department led by Education MEC Sello Lehare is en route the school to investigate the alleged racial segregation.

"This was meant to be an exciting day for me but it's not", said the parent.

TimesLIVE reported a mother, who chose to remain anonymous to protect the identity of her child, was fuming after an image was shared on Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke's WhatsApp group.

He added: "We are suspending her [the teacher] because we want the investigation to be fair and free".

Racism is still deeply embedded in South Africa almost 25 years after white-minority rule ended.

The pupils were attending their first day at the Schweizer-Reneke school in North West province, and the teacher had taken a photograph to send to anxious parents.

"All I saw was messages from the white parents saying "dankie, dankie" ('thank you, thank you') on the WhatsApp group but no one was saying anything about the separation of the learners".

The image began circulating on social media.

"On behalf of the department, I wish to condemn in its strongest terms any allegation of racism in our schools which contradict the constitution of our country".

School leaders have now launched a racism probe after the picture, taken by a class teacher, emerged.

There have been calls to shut down the private school while others said it was proof that racism was still rampant in everyday life across South Africa.

Some white parents have removed their children from the school because they fear for their safety. However, based on our understanding and the video you will see below, things have intensified outside the school, where protesters, dressed in political regalia, have picketed, chanting angrily and climbing the school's fence.
