Donald Trump Says He Will Cancel Trip to Davos if Shutdown Continues

Trump, who is visiting the US-Mexico border on Thursday, tweeted from Texas that he will be "respectfully canceling" the Davos trip because of the "Democrats intransigence on border security".

US President Donald Trump speaks to reporters after he addressed a closed Senate Republican policy lunch as a partial government shutdown enters its 19th day on Capitol Hill in Washington, US.

President Donald Trump said he will skip the annual gathering of global financial elites in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos later this month if the partial government shutdown isn't resolved by then.

Partisan disagreements over the project, which was the president's signature campaign promise, drove a stalemate that caused the lapse in funding on December 21 for about one-quarter of the government.

The Davos conference is scheduled to start on January 22, so Trump's announcement means the current government shutdown may continue to that date and beyond.

The partial government shutdown, now in its 20th day, could end by the meeting's January 22 start date.

After Thursday, the current shutdown will be the longest in USA history.

China and the United States have agreed to a 90-day pause in implementing tariffs in order to hammer out a trade deal.

The Trump administration is engaged in trade talks with the European Union and China, among others.
