Labour's policy is to push for a general election if the Prime Minister fails to get her Brexit deal through Parliament.

Britain is due leave the European Union on March 29, but Prime Minister Theresa May is struggling to get her exit deal approved by parliament, opening up huge uncertainty over whether a deal is possible, or even whether the country will leave at all.

But shadow global trade secretary Mr Gardiner said "the quickest way of getting a people's vote" is to have a general election, because legislating for a referendum would take far longer.

Jeremy Corbyn has come under increasing pressure to throw his weight behind a referendum if Labour can not force an early election.

The group said that 201 constituency Labour parties are set to debate a motion calling for a stronger line against Brexit by the end of this month.

The Cardiff Central MP, a supporter of the People's Vote campaign for a second EU referendum, said: "The EU has made it clear, repeatedly, that there is no prospect of a deal that differs, in any substantial form, from that negotiated with Theresa May".

"If the deal is not voted on, then we are going to be in uncharted territory", May told BBC on Sunday.

Suggesting an incoming Labour government would strike their own Brexit deal with Brussels, Mr Corbyn will add: "It would give the winning party a renewed mandate to negotiate a better deal for Britain and secure support for it in parliament and across the country".

"I don't think anybody can say exactly what will happen in terms of the reaction we will see in Parliament". "We have always said that it's a matter of when, not if we table a motion of no confidence and we'll judge the timing day by day".

Labour's Barry Gardiner during an appearance on Question Time.

"In that situation, it won't be us slapping the leadership but millions of Labour voters who want the party to fight for the public services, rights and living standards that will otherwise be hammered by any kind of Brexit deal".

When pressed by host Mishal Husain whether this was a concrete pledge, he said: "We have said that we will bring forward a vote of no confidence in the Government when they lose their key legislation".
