First Direct Evidence Stars Like Our Sun Turn Into Crystals — SNAPSHOT

The Sun Will Turn Into a Giant Crystal Ball After It Dies

Billions of years in the future, our dead sun will morph into a giant cosmic jewel, a new study suggests. And because white dwarfs are among our cosmos' oldest stellar objects, with predictable life stages, astronomers often use them as "clocks" to date surrounding groups of stars. To put that in perspective: A mere teaspoon of white-dwarf material would weigh about as much as an elephant, if you could somehow transport the stuff to our planet.

A scan of the heavens has shown space is littered with the crystallized remains of stars, and our own sun is expected to go the same way, too.

The discovery, led by Dr Pier-Emmanuel Tremblay and published in the journal Nature, means that white dwarf stars could be potentially billions of years older than previously thought.

'The sun itself will become a crystal white dwarf in about 10 billion years'. But to find direct evidence, the team turned to data gathered by the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite and analyzed some 15,000 white dwarf candidates. Gaia does this by precisely monitoring the positions of huge numbers of stars; the mission team aims to study 1 billion stars over the spacecraft's operational lifetime. These data revealed an odd "pileup" - an overabundance of white dwarfs with certain colors and brightnesses that can not be explained by the objects' ages or masses.

Though they look serene and silent from our vantage on Earth, stars are actually roiling balls of violent plasma.

Crystallization sets in when white dwarfs cool down to ten million degrees Celsius and bigger stars will crystallize faster than smaller ones.

'It was predicted fifty years ago that we should observe a pile-up in the number of white dwarfs at certain luminosities and colours due to crystallisation and only now this has been observed. But the material in this case is oxygen and carbon, and it's crystallizing at temperatures that aren't exactly chilly.

According to the authors of the new paper, the release of heat energy alone would not be enough to account for their observations.

But whether the Earth's rocky core will survive is uncertain. "This will push the carbon upward, and that separation will release gravitational energy".

Astronomers had long suspected such crystallization was possible.
