Puerto Rico's gay rapper and musician Kevin Fret succumbed to his injuries after he was shot multiple times while riding a motorbike on Thursday, BBC reported. He was taken to Río Piedras Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation into his murder is underway.

During Fret's career, he frequently spoke of trying to open doors for other emerging artists in the LGBTQ community trying to break into the rap game.

Fret's manager, Eduardo Rodriguez, confirmed his client's death in a statement to Billboard.

"His passion was music, and still had a lot to do".

Confirming his death, Mr Rodriguez said: "There are no words that describe the feeling we have and the pain that causes us to know that a person with so many dreams has to go".

The singer, who is from Puerto Rico, stepped into the spotlight less than a year ago with the release of "Soy Asi".

"We must all unite in these hard times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico", the statement further read.

Fret, who spent time living in Miami, told magazine Paper previous year: "I'm a person that doesn't care what anybody has to say..."

Police have said there is a "crisis of violence" on the Caribbean island, following a rise in street crime.
