But union officials said some Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers, who carry out airport security screening, had already quit because of the shutdown and others were considering quitting.

Airports Council International-North America, which represents United States airports, urged Mr Trump and congressional leaders in a letter to quickly reopen the government.

Airport security officers, along with air traffic controllers and employees at more than a dozen USA agencies and departments, have been caught in a political battle between President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats over whether to fund a border wall with Mexico.

"I get nervous on flights and having them there really makes there makes me feel more comfortable", said Kyle Gorman. Even though she's not getting paid, she's showing up to work.

Several federal workers are now speaking out about working without pay or being furloughed in their job and an uncertain future. They're anxious how they're going to pay their mortgages, their rent, their auto payments.

Screeners start around $24,000 a year, and most earn between $26,000 and $35,000, according to TSA.

The lawsuit filed by the National Air Traffic Controllers Association union charges that Trump, the Federal Aviation Administration and other USA officials are violating workers' constitutional rights by "depriving them of their hard-earned compensation without the requisite due process". Shuker asked. "You figure the government would be a model employee right, they should probably be the best, they should probably set the example ー but there they are, asking people to come in and not get paid, or people are sitting at home and not able to work".

A similar suit was filed on behalf of federal workers at the departments of Justice, Agriculture and Homeland Security.

The stress is already taking a toll at some airports.

A United spokesperson told the Herald that they did not predict its passengers would experience flight delays due to the temporary terminal closure as the airline 'will work to ensure we do everything we can for our customers'.

Bilello said on Twitter that the TSA is working with "stakeholders and industry partners to explore efforts to consolidate officers and operations".

In downtown Dallas, dozens of workers and union members representing various federal agencies gathered to bring attention to the plight of families hit by the impasse and to implore President Donald Trump to work with Congress to end the funding fight. For employees, the consequences are getting real as they're about to miss their first paycheck on Friday. But Chin said the airport has been monitoring security checkpoints and they have not seen abnormal delays.
