Amazon's next big thing could be game streaming

STREAMING VIDEO! THAT'S SO 2018 DARLING.is probably something an Amazon exec said as the seller of everything is reportedly developing its own game streaming service.

Deadline also reports that Amazon is now speaking with publishers to distribute their games on the untitled Amazon game-streaming platform.

Streaming game services represent the latest evolution in video games, which have transitioned over the years from cartridges to discs and, more often than not, digital downloads.

Google is also in on the game streaming game with Project Stream, which it tested past year by streaming Assassin's Creed Odyssey through the Chrome browser, and it has plans to further develop the service with the use of the latest graphics cards from AMD.

A few sources in the know spoke to The Information about Amazon's plans to join the ranks of Microsoft and Google by developing its own game streaming service, although it seems the service won't be available until 2020.

The idea is that the service will handle all the heavy computing needed to run graphics-intensive games in the cloud, and then stream it to your computer or mobile device so your experience is indistinguishable from running those titles natively on a high-end gaming system.

Should the service pan out, however, Amazon would nearly certainly include it on Amazon Fire TV Edition screens and Amazon Fire TV devices, plus tablets and smartphones.

Following up on the rumour, The Verge spotted two job openings listed by Amazon for engineers in Seattle, both specifying they'd be working on "Cloud Games".
