Coming to America 2 is 'officially moving forward' with Eddie Murphy

The original Coming to America starred Murphy as Akeem, an African prince who travels to America to find a wife who will love him for him, rather than his immeasurable wealth and royal status.

Today's news, then, is something of a shock: according to Deadline, Murphy has signed on to headline a sequel to 1988's Coming to America. The comedian will be teaming up with Craig Brewer for the film who he recently worked alongside for Netflix's Dolemite Is My Name. Murphy is producing the film alongside Kevin Misher while Barris will serve as executive producer.

"After many years of anticipation, I'm thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward", Murphy said in a statement.

Coming To America 2 will follow the story of Prince Akeem's return to America after discovering that he has a long lost son. "We've assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an awesome job on Dolemite, and I'm looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen".

The same report also states that the producers are planning on bringing back Arsenio Hall (Semmi), Shari Headley (Lisa McDowell), John Amos, (Lisa's father) and James Earl Jones ( the king of Zamunda). "From Hustle and Flow to his work with Eddie on Dolemite Is My Name, he never fails to blow me away".

Brewer is repped by WME and attorney Carlos Goodman, and Murphy is WME, ML Management and Ziffren Brittenham's Matt Johnson and Skip Brittenham; Barris is CAA, Artists First and attorney Gregg Gellman. "He is a true auteur and we couldn't be more thrilled to have him on board".

At this time, there is no official production start scheduled for Coming to America 2, but the hope is that it will begin shooting sometime this year.
