"We're looking at the operating rules around the Menindee Lakes and what we can do".

Cotton Australia said drought was affecting the river system and that the industry was also suffering, forecasting its crop this season would be half of the previous year's. For too long, politicians have shifted blame from one another and pretended they can fix the policy without the fundamental issue of returning more water to our natural waterways and wetlands.

In the town itself, the stench from rotting fish carcasses near the main boat ramp wafts into the Burke and Wills Menindee Motel.

In order to get to the bottom of the matter, state opposition leader Michael Daley, from the Labor Party, has called for a full investigation into the matter, with wide-ranging powers of investigation. "We've spent decades and $13 billion only to end up with ecological tragedy in our rivers".

Meanwhile an emotional video made by two other locals has gone viral on Facebook.

"We're working through it as fast as we can to see what solutions we can contribute towards and I commend him [Blair] for being on the ground", she said.

"You can not dismiss the fact there is a drought and a lack of water".

"You can't dismiss the impact of drought when in the last six months, we have had 30 gigalitres of water flow in the Northern System, while in an average year we would expect 4,000 gigalitres".

Fish kills have been caused by a Low Dissolved Oxygen event associated with the rapid die off of an algal bloom along this section of the river.

NSW Labor confirmed that it would seek to overturn the plan - supported by all basin state governments and the Morrison government - to effectively decommission the Menindee Lakes System. "This is not about diversions, but about inflows". He added the SDL project at Menindee, which aims to save 105 gigalitres a water a year, must proceed. "You would blow up the [Murray-Darling Basin] Plan".

Independent MP Jeremy Buckingham posted the footage of the incident to Twitter earlier today.

That's not to say Murray Cod Australia hasn't experienced its own disastrous codtastrophe.

"Further upstream at Dirranbandi (home of Cubbie Cotton), just 300 hectares of cotton has been planted, which is 1 per cent of what can be planted in a very good season".

The iconic Aussie fish is in the headlines right now after a video surfaced showing angry farmers hauling dead "century-old" Murray cod out of the Darling River, calling it an Australian environmental "disaster".

"Cotton Australia is very proud of our industry that produces a quality fibre that is in demand both here at home and around the world; but as an industry we are growing very exhausted of being "the whipping boy" for all the problems that are being brought on by this crippling drought".
